Smart Yacht Care from Marine Tune

Marine Tune Team We caught up with Ben Tallowwood of Marine Tune, Bayview Anchorage Marina to ask for a few Smart tips to help your boating trips run smoothly.

First up Ben talked about your yacht's engine.

When you arrive at the marina your yacht will already be re-fuelled for you (a great advantage of a professionally managed boat share).

When you turn on your engine Ben stresses the most important thing to do is look over the side and check that water is coming out of the exhaust. If there's no water - turn the engine off immediately.

You will hear the high pitched oil alarm. This should continue for 5 seconds maximum. If it sounds for more than 5 seconds turn the engine off.

Next have a look at the engine panel and make sure no lights are on. If you see a light come on during your trip put the engine in neutral and stop if you are in safe water. Then call us.

Ben also talked about the batteries on your syndicate yacht.

Boat Share Fleet All of our yachts have sealed gel batteries. They are far superior to lead acid batteries, but they don't last indefinitely!

Ben suggests you make sure you run the engine for 2 hours twice a day.

It's better to run engine under load (ie while moving) than to leave it running in neutral while at anchor.

Of course while on board you need to be sensible with your use of lights and the fridge. If you don't motor much one day, turn the fridge off overnight.

The water tanks on you yacht hold around 150-200 litres of water. This means that if you are away for a few days you will need to limit your water use.

Ben suggests you take short showers and make sure you don't leave the tap running while you brush your teeth.

And finally marine toilets...

All yachties know how easily they block.

The easiest way to avoid problems is to remind everyone on board at the beginning of your trip that nothing goes down the toilet other than a small amount of marine toilet paper unless you have eaten it first.

We are really lucky to have Marine Tune at Bayview Marina.
